 Class  11/10/12

Good job everyone!
Practice your WAIT and walking away. Don't go too far or your dog will break. Work your way to a longer distance.

BOW - A fun trick, teaching your dog to follow directions and impress people

LEAVE game -  use your directions; WAIT, LEAVE, SIT, OK. You and your dog are learning teamwork.

October 13 - Basic Obedience

 Class Outing

Use WITH ME command when crossing street, climbing stairs, when passing distractions.

If your dog is pulling on a walk - slow down. If pulling continues, WAIT, until your dog collects herself.

The fun game at the park;
 HUP and  OFF
You can find ways to apply these at home, no doubt.

Practice a little  bit of STAY to COME at least once a day. Try to make the session under 5 minutes and short and sweet.

Remember to wait for your dog to make the effort.

Good work everyone!!!

Good "SIT" Molly

Sometimes it is easier for your dog to stay focused if they have a little  "personal space" around any distractions. When practicing, find your "sweet spot", the distance where your dog can maintain their self control and not react to distractions. Once you have cemented that behavior, then you are ready to inch up a bit.

Distractions Class

Well done; Evolie, Molly, Luna, Ringo and Cecil

When your dog is in "With Me", he or she is learning, under your direction, to observe distractions, rather than feel the need to act on it.
Each dog has things that tweek them, and that is OK, it is the acting on it, while on leash that needs to be addressed, at least at first..
So when your dog is on leash, it should be clear, you are the decision maker.

"With Me"  when crossing streets, when on busy streets or tight squeezes, and before distractions come your way.

Get in the habit of always releasing your dog from every command with an OK, this will help your dog WAIT, more easily.

Practice;     SIT-WAIT-OK to catch a treat, these will soon be your proper greeting skills
Practice;     BACK- WAIT- OK or just   WAIT -OK at all doors at entries and exits

Clear Directions

  1. Dog's name first
  2. followed by your command ( ie; SIT, COME, WAIT)
  3. then your Hand Signal
  4. Smile
  5. Praise

Beginners Class - Setting Your Dog Up To Win- 6/23

  Walking Instructions

  • Let's Go - to head out
  • Wait /OK - at all doors, curbs, etc.
  • With Me - walking past distractions, crossing streets, when your dog is pulling, and for no reason.
  • OK / Free - to release your dog from the With Me.
                                       Well done.

OWNERS - Nice body language and  I am impressed that everyone is remembering to use their words first, before leash correction.

DOGS - They are able to focus on commands better. Also, the pups are able to settle themselves down, more quickly after some excitement.

Each dog has their limitations. Know what those are and slowly work up to where those limitations become less and less under your directions.

Petting Your Dog for Praise

When petting your dog for a job well done, pet him under, not over.  A tickle under the chin, or a calming touch on the chest will build your dog's confidence.

Saturday, May 19, 2012

Class 2/19

LOOK for treat
COME to the hand
DROP/LEAVE- for treat when playing the keep away game
DONE
Owners, your posture and eye contact. Say commands 1X let your dog do the work.

End interaction while everyone is still cooperating.
Slow it down

Riggins is eager to show off his SIT

Riggins does not agree, he thinks he should get a treat for everything he does, but in my opinion, this is;    When To Treat
  • Kennel - Up   [as a lure]
  • Trade - Up    [for stolen or "acquired" items]
  •  Out From Under  [the couch, the bed, or coffee table]

So proud of "Team Honey"

Watching Honey walking in a perfect "With -Me", with her owner, on Cedar Springs while people, cars and buses passed us by, gave me goose bumps.
You have come a long way my dear!

Your Reactive Dog

  • Find how much "personal space" your dog needs before feeling the need to act out, and stay in it.
  • Look for your dog's "tell" and once found, redirect your dog before you see the signal.
  • When your dog is going "over the top", don't add anything more.
  • When in doubt; WAIT
  • When under control;  COME AROUND and FINISH

What We Learned In Class Today

  1. A long WAIT is hard work for both dog and owner.
Look at the dog's leash, not the dog, to figure out if his or her WAIT is true.  A SIT or STAND or DOWN is OK. Even a bit of a wander, as long as lead is loose. If not pop correct.

 2.  Redirect out of control behavior with a COME AROUND to  FINISH, if possible.

Practice "Waiting for Godot" on the corner - daily
